The danger of “when things calm down…”

I’ve caught myself saying this a lot lately:

When things calm down, I’ll get back to it.

The “it” for me is relationships and business systems. Both things that need attention right now. You may find yourself saying/thinking this as well.

When work slows down, I’ll get serious about my health.
When the schedule settles, I’ll be more present at home.
When this season passes, I’ll call that friend.
When I have more margin, I’ll deal with the thing I keep avoiding.

But things don’t really calm down.

One thing ends and another one starts. A project wraps up. School starts. Kids sports begin. The calendar opens up for a minute, then something else fills it.

And if I’m honest, “when things calm down” is sometimes just a nicer way of saying, I don’t want to deal with this yet. Which is a sign that I need to deal with it.

I don’t need to fix everything or solve every problem this week. You probably don’t either.

But there is likely one thing you’ve been putting off.

The workout.
The conversation.
The apology.
The appointment.
The budget.

Don’t wait for the perfect season to take it seriously, or even to take action.

For me, it’s always helpful to put it on the calendar. It doesn’t force me to do it but it significantly increases my odds.

Let’s not wait for when things supposedly calm down. They won’t. Pick one thing. Do it this week.

Live above the line.
For you,
Kevin
