GOOD MORNING
I used to wake up to my phone.
First thing every morning. Check texts, emails, social media. Start the day reactive, responding to everyone else's agenda before I even knew what mine was. The news of the day or an unexpected email would kick off my day with distraction and stress.
Sound familiar?
Here's what I discovered: How you start your morning determines whether you'll spend the day deciding or drifting.
A study published in the Journal of Health Psychology found that people with consistent morning routines reported 23% higher life satisfaction and 19% better stress management. Sadly, research also shows that only 27% of men have an intentional morning routine.
Most guys wake up and immediately hand control to their circumstances. And that’s how The Drift wins the day before the day even begins.
Four years ago, I changed. I implemented a simple but effective morning routine to invest in my mind, body and soul. I wake up around 5a (I don’t set an alarm, I’m just used to waking up early - but find a time that works for you) and to the following:
Workout. I use an app called Ladder, and I get a 40 minute workout every day at my house with only dumbbells and kettlebells (get 7 days free). When I started, I just did sit-ups and push-ups.
Devotional
Gratitude Journal. I use an app called Day One to write down 10 things I am grateful for, and then read over some identity statements.
In less than one hour, before everyone else is awake, I’ve set the tone for my day. I’m now at my best for my family, for my business, for myself. When my family wakes up, I’m ready to be present with them. When I get to the office I’m refreshed, focused and ready. Instead of pouring from an empty cup, I am overflowing from a place of rest and purpose. I’ve done some version of this now for four years. At home, in hotels, on vacation. And that’s the key. Your morning routine needs to be simple and repeatable. Start small and build.
There’s a Navy SEAL saying that goes, “Win your morning, win your day. I’ve found that to be true. But it starts by deciding.
📌 QUOTE OF THE WEEK "You'll never change your life until you change something you do daily. The secret of your success is found in your daily routine." - John Maxwell
🧠 INSIGHT:
Your morning routine isn't about productivity hacks. It's about identity.
When you invest in yourself first - before checking email, before helping others, before reacting to the world - you're declaring who you are. You're a man who prioritizes growth over comfort. Purpose over convenience.
Most men spend their mornings serving everyone else's priorities. No wonder they feel lost by noon.
NO DRIFT CHALLENGE
This week: Before you touch your phone, do one thing to invest in yourself. Take just 15 minutes. Go for a walk, do pushups, read, journal.
15 minutes. Don't overcomplicate it. Set the tone for your day.
I’d love to hear what challenge you take on this week. Reply to this email to let me know. Even better, post it on Instagram and tag @no.drift. Let’s build a community of encouragement there.
CLOSING THOUGHT
The man who masters his morning masters his day. The man who masters his day builds the life he actually wants.
Stop waking up defeated. Start deciding.
For you,
Kevin
