Lessons from the Biosphere
Are you familiar with the Biosphere 2 experiment? If you’re a child of the 80s-90s, you may also remember the movie Bio-Dome. which was in fact inspired by this experiment. I wrote about this in my daily newsletter a few weeks ago, but it’s a story and concept that I think matters for men.
The quick version of the story goes like this: Scientists wanted to create the most optimized climate/environment that enabled self-sustained living for humans. During the experiment, trees grew incredibly fast but then started falling over before they reached maturity. Which was odd considering there was no wind in the Biosphere.
Confused, the scientists started to dig deeper. What they realized was that these trees, who grew quickly in this “ideal” environment, had not developed what is called stress wood. It’s something that trees grow to fix bending caused from high winds, and it allows them to be sturdy and resilient, holding their own weight.
Remember, the Biosphere 2 environment had no wind. If it did, the trees would’ve developed the stress wood and a stronger root system, which would’ve allowed them to sustain their weight. But without these things, the trees grew fast but were structurally unstable. They had no firm foundation to stand on.
Their lack of adversity made them weak.
Good timber does not grow with ease: The stronger wind, the stronger trees.
None of us love adversity, but it is required. Hard seasons are how we build our foundations (even if they seem shaky during those seasons). They are the times when we discover who we really are, what we truly believe, what we are capable of.
Because if we never face these tests, we’ll never build the strength to withstand the growth we are trying to achieve. The higher we climb, the deeper we must be rooted.
We think comfort is the “ideal” environment. Turns out we need adversity to truly build our strength.
Live above the line.
For you,
Kevin
