The Comparison Trap

“At least I’m not like that guy.”

How many times have you said that? If I’m being honest, it’s a thought that has gone through my head too many times to count.

I may not be the best husband but at least I’m not like that guy.
I may not be the best dad but at least I’m not like that guy.
I may not be in the best shape but at least I’m not like that guy.
I may not be killing it in life but at least I’m not that guy.

There are obviously a lot of problems with that line of thought. One, I don’t know his story. I’m making a blind judgment. But two, and this is biggest one for me: that guy didn’t agree to my standard. I did. And in the moment, I’m trying to make myself feel better about not living up to my standard, by judging someone else off a standard they never signed up for. He may be living his standard just fine.

All to make us feel better.
And yet, judgement only makes you worse. Even if it makes you feel better in the moment, it will eventually catch up to you.

Let each person examine his own work, and then he can take pride in himself alone, and not compare himself with someone else.

Galatians 6:4

Your standard is your standard. Don’t look at someone doing “worse” than you and compare them to your standard. (comparing ourselves to someone doing “better” is a different topic altogether)

Live your standard. Hold yourself accountable to your standard. Encourage others.

Live above the line.
For you,
Kevin
